COURSE MATERIALS

This course is anchored by the Distance Learning for Professionals in Hearing Health Sciences Training Workbook. The workbook will guide you through the course curriculum and contains 40 lessons, which each have an accompanying test on the Online Learning System (note: Lesson 26 does not have a test).

The workbook is accompanied by the Professional Training Textbook, and together these texts and the Online Learning System have been designed to provide an integrated approach to learning and standardized on-the-job training. Each textbook chapter focuses on a specific topic and builds upon the material presented in the workbook. It is important that each topic be reviewed with the trainer so that skills associated with the knowledge are appropriately developed and reinforced.

The Online Learning System provides 24/7, unlimited access to learning tools such as digital flashcards, articles, and recorded webinars, all organized by lesson. Students use this platform to take lesson tests, complete the final exam, and print the Certificate of Completion. To pass the course, students must complete all 39 lesson tests and receive a passing score (minimum 75%) on the final exam. After passing the final exam, the Certificate of Completion will be available to download/print.

Note: The course is only available as a package. None of the materials (including workbook, textbook, and online learning system) may be purchased independently.

Mentors and/or students should consider purchasing the  IHS Total Training Solution, which is the 3rd Edition Trainer Manual and the brand new, online Trainer Toolbox. The Total Training Solution is aligned to the course lessons in the workbook and offers the hands-on activities that apply the knowledge learned to specific clinical scenarios. It providers the trainer with tools to measure student performance and offers guidance that helps the student join their knowledge with the development of practical skills.

Together, the  Total Training Solution and the Distance Learning for Professionals in Hearing Health Sciences course provide students and trainers with a roadmap that guides each through an integrated learning experience.

FAQs

How do I become a Hearing Aid Specialist?

Contact your state/provincial licensing board to learn exactly what the requirements are. Each jurisdiction has unique licensing requirements. Some require IHS’ Distance Learning for Professionals in Hearing Health Sciences Course; some do not. In both cases, IHS’ program is recommended because it provides a solid foundation.

How do I buy the IHS Distance Learning Course?

Click here, choose the course materials you wish to purchase; click “Buy Now”.

How long does it take to receive my purchase?

Orders are shipped via UPS and you can expect delivery within 5 business days. Rush shipments may be requested and the purchaser will pay actual shipping fees.

Once I received my book, what do I do next?

To gain access to the online learning system, open your workbook and follow the instructions on the inside cover access sticker.

Once I register on the course website, what can I expect next?

Within the online learning system you will find the flashcards, lesson tests, final exam and links to additional resources including articles, webinars and more! It is important to regularly discuss what you are learning and your progress with your sponsor or mentor, especially any material you find difficult. To pass the course, students must complete all 39 tests and receive a minimum score of 75% on the online final examination. A certificate will be awarded upon completing the course. These materials, combined with practical experience guided by a mentor, are essential to your training.

Do I need to create an online profile?

Yes. Follow the prompts to complete your registration and set up an account and password. For technical assistance, contact support@haydenmcneil.com.

Can I use my brother’s laptop to take the course?

Yes. You may access the online course from any computer, anywhere, at any time.

How long do I have to complete the course?

There is no time limit, other than that which may be imposed by your regulatory agency. You will have lifetime access to the online learning system.

What is the average time it takes for a person to complete the program?

IHS does not monitor the length of the course. This is an independent, self-study course and you set your own pace. It’s totally up to you whether you want to cram and get it done in a few weeks, or utilize many months to complete the course.

What does the course entail?

The course is 40 lessons. At the end of each lesson, there is a test.  Please note: Lesson 26: Hearing Instrument History does not require a test. Lesson tests are taken online. Results can be viewed immediately so you can see which areas of weakness need to be improved upon. There are no pass/fail results on the lesson tests; just do your best. The 39 lesson tests prepare you for the cumulative 100 question final exam. 75% is a passing score on the final exam. You may re-take the final examination as many times as necessary.

Can IHS provide the correct answers to the cumulative final exam?

Unfortunately, we cannot provide correct answers because it would jeopardize the integrity of the course.

What happens after I pass the final examination?

After you have taken the final exam, you will receive instant score results. If you have passed you will be able to print a Certificate of Completion from your computer or download an electronic copy. It is your responsibility to forward documentation to your local licensing body, if required.

What else should I know about the state/provincial licensing process?

All questions surrounding licensure should be directed to your local licensing body. To help you prepare for a licensing examination, you should obtain a Study Guide to prepare for the licensing examination.

How do I become an IHS member?

Good news! Every Distance Learning purchase is accompanied by a complimentary IHS Student Membership; a $40 value with an expiration date of December 31 of the year in which you register.

My licensing body requires that I have a mentorship/apprenticeship. How do I go about obtaining one?

You may be responsible for locating a hearing aid specialist that agrees to mentor you. You may use the Directory located on the IHS website to search for a hearing professional in your area.

My mentor has the old IHS course (the teal books); can I use this instead?

While there is certainly good information to glean from an old version of the course, IHS no longer provides any support for previous versions. No lesson tests nor the final exam are available. For the most complete learning experience, IHS strongly recommends use of the newest edition of the course.
